Nanoparticles for Cancer Test
I found this article interesting cause my grandfather is a doctor that specializes in cancer specifically leukemia. He always talks to me about how to prevent all different types of cancer. In this article, it talks about a recent technological advance made by the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) which provides an inexpensive way to detect lung cancer. They designed a nanoparticle breath test composed of gold nanoparticles covered with different thiol-based organic films. These films were designed to respond to volatile organic carbons which are evident in the breath of people that have lung cancer. However, before the films could be made, Technion had to collect breath samples from a random group of healthy people. This was so they could identify the VOCs which enact as a sign for lung cancer.
This test is still being reviewed before distributing to doctors around the world. It will take some time, but it is definitely needed. 1.3 million people are dying from this disease around the world each year!
