Snow Chemistry

This article from the US Army Corps of Engineers, describes the ongoing research of snow chemistry. Whenever snow covers the ground there are many different substances and elements that pass through the snow and they change the concentration of the snow. Also many reactions take place in the white fluffy flakes with the exchange of air and other chemical species. Many researchers use the snow concentrations to determine what substances were in the atmosphere at that time. In addition to determining the current atmospheric elements and other substances, scientists can look at different layers of snow in place where the snow does not melt and determine the past atmospheric and other elements that affected the area at the time. Who knows what secrets are hidden within the snowpack!
