The LCROSS spacecraft targeted the crater Cabeus near the moon's south pole, where scientists predicted there would be water. When the spacecraft landed, the impact kicked up about 100 kg of water in the camera's fleid of view. LCROSS's instruments found evidence for water from two key areas of the spectrum: infrared and ultraviolet. The infrared spectrometer identified spectral dips unique to water and the ultraviolet showed a sharp peak corresponding to the hydroxyl radical, which is associated with water. Possible sources include comets or chemical reactions with solar wind. This is clearly a significant discovery.
