Who knew that gold can be made with the help of bacteria? According to an article in the Science Daily, the origin of secondary gold grains is a highly controversial topic in the science world. There are three main theories about the formation of gold grains. One idea is that the gold grains are purely detrital. Another idea is that they're formed by a chemical accretion. And last but not least is the idea that there is a microbial process involved in the process. Dr Frank Reith, a CSIRO researcher discovers evidence that supports the third theory. Dr. Reith's theory suggest that bacteria plays a significant role in the formation of secondary gold grain. An explicit overview of the concept can be read at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/08/060802103513.htm.

What elements do the scientist believe the bacteria ingests to create the gold?

I went to the site and it seemed that the bacteria aren't really making the gold but simply causing it to participate from solution. Still very interesting how a biological process plays such a key role in a process usually thought of as being completely chemical.
