Researchers at the University of Rhode Island have just discovered 34 new beneficial compounds in pure maple syrup from Quebec. In the laboratory researchers found that some of the compounds have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can fight off cancer, diabetes and bacterial illnesses. One researcher whose main study is diabetes discovered that phenolics in maple syrup inhibit two carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes associated with type 2 diabetes. This discovery could aid in the cure for this type of diabetes. With the discovery of all of the 34 new compounds it could lead to the production of medicines that could in the long run potentially fight fatal diseases.

Who knew that maple syrup could ever help the health of the people consuming it? I feel like I should try it, I do not eat syrup on my pancakes. Instead I put whipped cream. But according to this article, syrup contains anti-oxidants and anti-flammatory and phenolics have been discovered to inhibit the two carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes. I wonder when maple syrup is learned diet/less calories if the power of fighting cancer and diabetes is still as powerful? Amazing! Next time, order pancakes with a side of a lot of maple syrup :)
ReplyDeleteIts great that everyday scientists are finding new, natural ways to better our health straight out of our environments, and for some people, right in their cabinet. It would be great if this discovery could help fight fatal diseases and better the lives of people everywhere who suffer from diabetes, or even cure it. You never know what you'll find in your breakfast foods!
