Briggs-Rauscher Reaction

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IggngxY3riU

This video demonstrates one of very few oscillating chemical reactions between three clear solutions. The first solution contains potassium iodate and sulfuric acid dissolved in water. The second solution contains malonic acid and manganese sulfate monohydrate dissolved in water. The final solution is hydrogen peroxide dissolved in water. The video explains the overall reaction and shows a list of all the sub reactions involved. I find this video interesting because I’ve always thought that chemical reactions could only go one way unless you interfered with it. I was shocked to see how quickly the color of the mixture changed back and forth, as if it was stuck in an infinite loop. This reaction is called the, “Briggs – Rauscher Reaction” dedicated to the chemistry teachers who discovered it. I found this video along with a YouTube series called, “MIT Chemistry Behind the Magic.” I highly encourage anyone to watch this video as it is both eye catching and chemically fascinating.

  1. I just watched this video, and you're right this is an awesome experiment. It's so cool to see how the color of the solution changes because of how the reaction is moving, causing a variation in the concentrations of the three types of Iodine. Watching chemistry happen is always cool to see especially if it changes color! Thanks for sharing.
