Producing Hydrogen

http://www.chemeurope.com/en/news/144760/producing-hydrogen-from-water-with-carbon-charcoal-powder.html

Producing hydrogen is known to be expensive. Originally, hydrogen is produced from water H2< /sub>O with electric current or catalysts such as the noble metal, Platinum, which make the process expensive to perform. In order to replace expensive catalysts Ikuko Akimoto and his colleagues discovered alternative materials which are carbon and charcoal powder. While these alternative ingredients do the same job as the catalysts they are economical.

While I was researching about producing hydrogen and reasons why scientists are interested in producing I learned that hydrogen can be used as a fuel for cars. This can be beneficial to us because hydrogen fuel can be produced domestically and is not harmful to the environment.  Although it might take a while to utilize this method I think that it will be beneficial both economically and environmentally in the long term.

  1. I think it's a fantastic idea, especially since charcoal power is unlikely to have any other practical uses, but there is still the problem of coal being a nonrenewable resource. I guess it would depend upon how many warehouses of charcoal power people have stored up to decide whether this is a good, sustainable alternative.
