"Polar" Bears

http://www.neatorama.com/2010/03/22/polar-bears-are-soluble-in-water/#!pOiyO

The cartoon addresses the idea that “polar” bears dissolve in water. It is a play on words because of the idea “like dissolves like”. If you try to dissolve non-polar substance in a polar substance, the energy in separating polar molecules is not recovered by the solute/solvent interactions. When both substances are both polar or non-polar, the energy in separating the solvent and solute is made up by combining together. This play on words emphasizes that both are polar molecules. Due to this fact, the solute, polar bear, would be able to dissolve in the solvent, water.

  1. Now I can remember why polar substances dissolve with each other through the image of a polar bear in a cup during the exam. Yay!
