Leading scientists from around the world are warning of the detrimental effects of fluorochemicals. Fluorochemicals are synthetically manufactured chemicals designed to repel water and oil. They are commonly used today in industrial processing and products such as coverings for food paper, and board. The problem with fluorochemicals is they are difficult to breakdown, and they can build up in the human body and throughout the environment. Recent studies have linked the chemicals to serious health issues such as cancer, increased cholesterol, and a weaken immune system in children. The chemicals will decrease the ability to reproduce, and if a child is conceived, he or she will likely have chemicals transferred to his or her body through breast milk. Research chemist, Dr. Xenia Trier from the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark and colleagues have been advocates against fluorochemicals, yet they have not found a suitable replacement for the chemical. In fact, a large majority of the proposed replacements have even more detrimental side effects than the original fluorochemicals. This is an key issue that stresses the importance of being patient and following the scientific model. Safe chemicals are needed to replace the fluorochemicals, but it is obvious a solution will take time and research. Right now, it is important to use fluorochemicals only when absolutely necessary, and thus limiting the surplus of negative consequences.
