A New Kind of Battery

A group of scientist has created a new lithium air battery which in the future could be used to power electric cars. This battery has a larger charge capacity than previous batteries, is 20-30% more efficient in delivering its charge than the current batteries in electric cars. The batteries would also be more durable and be able to undergo many charges throughout its lifetime. The lithium-air battery has a lithium metal anode and a porous carbon cathode through which oxygen travels from the anode through the electrolyte to the cathode. To complete the battery they revamped a methylpyrrolidinium-based ionic liquid electrolyte changing the ratio of anions to cations to increase the battery performance. This is an important invention because it will be a huge improvement from previous battery technology.
