As a swimmer I always wondered about the chemical reactions taking place with chlorine in swimming pools. This article from The Pool Center explains how the chlorine used in pools is created and how it interacts and sanitizes the pool water. Chlorine is isolated by passing electricity through NaCl and H2O, this creates Cl2, NaOH, and H2. This isolated chlorine is used to sanitize pools, Cl2 is added to H2O, the reaction yields HOCl and HCl. The hypochlorous acid is what reacts and attacks the microorganisms in the pool water. The article also discusses the many hazards caused by using a strong chemical like chlorine. Next time you go swimming, you can think of the chemical process involved in keeping the pool clean and sanitary!
