This article from science daily is about researches at the University of Copenhagen who have recently been working on an artificial enzyme. Traditionally enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions in cells without requiring additional energy. As industrial chemical process have traditionally been messy and inefficient in terms of energy used, methods to save energy and resources have been looked at for a while. This artificially created enzyme has great utility, it's reliable, cheap, and can react with oxidizing processes, which is the primary means of industrial chemical production. While the enzyme is nowhere close to its biological relatives in effectiveness it shows great promise, as the researchers hope to develop more types of artificial enzymes which can be tailor made for any reaction. For me it is another example of science utilizing known biological process to make society more productive and ecological.
