Yeast in a shell

This article explains how Korean researchers have developed a way to equip individual cells of baker's yeast with a shell. The shells that enclose the individual cells are made of silicon dioxide. The researchers have also discovered that by coating these yeast cells, their lifespan has tripled. The shell protects the individual cells for unfavorable external conditions. Meaning that these shells can protect us from diseases or other illnesses that can be passed with baker's yeast that is put into our food.
