Food chemistry = excitement

After reading an article from Southtown Star, a Chicago-area newspaper, I've realized why watching Alton Brown on the Food Network is so exciting. "Most of the students watch Alton Brown, get intrigued and want to learn more," said a person interviewed for the article. The article begins with a description of a chemistry department doing a demonstration for National Chemistry Week where they made instant ice cream using liquid nitrogen. Not only does it sound cool to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen, I would be interested to see what it tastes like. At home, my family and I make a lot of homemade ice cream for cookouts. But, watching shows like Alton Brown's program or cool demonstrations make chemistry less scary and interesting. Reading this article makes me want to make Jell-O or ice cream like the students in the article.
