Batteries from Paper and Algae

It is now possible to make batteries out of many different substances. This article explains that a battery can be made out of just algae, paper, and salt water. However, these batteries have a lower voltage than regular batteries. Eventually, these batteries might be used for machines where metal batteries are impractical. The Cladophora cellulose which is in algae is "ideal for battery electrodes, as it has a very high surface area." The batteries are made by separating two cellulose electrodes with filter paper soaked in salt water. One electrode is coated with oxidized polypyrrole and the other is coated with reduced polypyrrole. The difference between the two electrodes provides the voltage of the battery. These batteries are environmentally friendly and can be made on your own. It is interesting to see how chemistry can affect many different aspects of a person's life.
