How safe is that water bottle?

The FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) has revised its position on bisphenol A, or BPA, one of the largest components of hard plastic bottles. After declaring the chemical safe for food and drink packaging in 2008, it announced that it now has "some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behaviour and prostate gland in foetuses, infants and young children' based on fairly recent studies looking at smaller-scale effects. They still hold the position that these plastic bottles are safe in normal use - when it is not used for hot liquids and is not scratched or worn. They recently allocated $30 million to study the safety of BPA with 10-year animal and human tests.
