Brain Cancer and Iron Oxidation

http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2013/09/cancer-malignancy-iron-oxidation-state

There has been recent research that shows a relationship between the ratio of iron(II) and iron(III) in brain tissue and the presence of cancer. The research suggests that this ratio can be used to determine the malignancy grade of present tumor. I found this article interesting because it talks about a potential advancement in the detection of cancer. I lost a family member very close to me due to cancer so whenever I see an article that discusses an advantage in cancer, it makes me excited. In addition, I had an internship working at a radiology lab and one of the experiments I completed focus on the effect of iron on plasmid DNA.

  1. I think this dicovery is amazing, because it can detect the malignancy grade of brain tumor by just measuring the ratio of ferrous and ferric, which can make the detection of brain cancer more convenient and more believable. As we all know, more and more people are dying for cancer each year, because many of them are not aware of the existence of cancer and the stage of it on time, so they miss the golden chance of treating. By using this new technique, we can detect the presence of cancer earlier and maybe save thousands of life. From this discovery we can learn that the research of chemistry can not only allow us to understand the world better, but also help to improve other fields that are related to chemitry, which makes me more excited about learning chemistry.
