Recently a group of Neuropharmacologists have been running tests to find a new use for a drug called Topiramate. Topiramate was origionally an epilepsy drug discovered in 1979. However, scientists have found that it is also an effective way to combat alcoholism, a problem that affects over 17 million people. Topiramate works by inhibiting the uptake of Dopamine, a chemical in the brain that causes the "feel good" effects of alcohol. The abuser acquires less of these feelings from the alcohol and therefore, their cravings are reduced. Researchers have also found that Topiramate can help to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, two problems that often accompany heavy drinking. This would help to lower the risk of heart disease for those who suffer from alcoholism. The woman shown in this video is just one example of the people that Topiramate has helped. She went from an alcoholic who drank around fifteen beers a day to just three. Hopefully, researchers will be able to continue researching this drug, and be able to put it to use to fight the awful disease that affects so many.
